What we need to know about children photography
As many of my clients know, I was inspired to start my career by my now eleven-year-old daughter. So, children’s photography has always been a passion.
But do you know what is so great about children?
Children don’t fake their emotions which is amazing but it also presents a challenge trying to photograph them. That is why I always work to capture them how they are. That being said, the photographer needs to gain their trust and make them feel comfortable. We need to build a relationship with them in a short amount of time. Asking what they like to do could be a good start.
If we let kids be kids it will be natural for them to be moving around. The photographer needs to be able to understand how to take quality photos during the short window of time that they have so it is a must that they are prepared.
Another point to always remember is that as the photographer you’re taller than the children. As a professional, we can’t spend the entire session looking down on them. We will need to connect with them on their level and make them laugh and have a good time. Eye contact at the same level. Got it?
Parents sometimes get very stressed during the photoshoots. This is mainly due to their children not behaving as they had hoped. But children are children and they have so much energy so I always tell parents to relax and let me take care of it. If the children aren’t cooperative there are many ways to convince them to be during the photoshoot. One technique that I have used often and with success is simply giving them a reward. They never leave my studio empty handed. That always works!
As a professional with over 10 years’ experience it is my job to guide you through the process and make it as enjoyable for you as it is for the children. Your little ones will continue to grow but you are in charge of capturing a lifetime of memories.
