Understanding your gassy baby - Fairfield - CT

One of the biggest problems reported by parents when they arrive at my studio for newborn photos is the difficulty in dealing with baby gas. I always recommend that the photo shoot should be done when the baby is around 5 to 15 days old, because infant gas usually becomes an issue after that time period.

But why do babies have gas? One reason is because their digestive system is still immature and they end up swallowing air as they eat. However, this does not cover all causes of baby gas. Some babies are sensitive to substances that may come from the mother's diet (who is currently breastfeeding) and even some formulas.

There are many visible signs and symptoms that help you identify if your baby has gas:

1.     Your baby may seem unhappy most of the time;

2.     They cry a lot and are uncomfortable for many periods during the day;

3.     They do not sleep well;

4.     They stretch their legs, implying that something is bothering them;

5.     They stop crying and feeling uncomfortable when you are breastfeeding.

As a mother myself, and having suffered along with my daughters for 3 months, I have some tips that you can do to alleviate this situation:

1.     There are several gas drops and gripe water brands that are all-natural and very helpful;

2.     Try to feed your baby in a position so that his body is more upright and not completely lying down;

3.     Place the baby on your forearm so that he is lying on his stomach and pat the baby on the back;

4.     Lay him on his back and start making circular movements with his legs, as if he were riding a bicycle;

5.     Have your baby burp more than once while you feed them;

6.     Feed him before he gets very hungry and starts crying compulsively. This makes them swallow more air than usual;

7.     Replace the formula with a different one.

Stay tuned for signs and talk to your pediatrician constantly because they can help you a lot in solving this problem. Be strong and be aware that this is a natural aspect of your baby's development.
